This prize recognises the top-performing student across the core biostatistics units — an outstanding achievement that reflects both technical excellence and sustained commitment.

Congratulation to Amanda Zdravkovic who won the Dr Michael Yung DES Academic Prize for 2025! This award presented by University of Adelaide and managed by the BCA, commemorates Dr. Michael Yung, who sadly passed away in December 2023. Dr. Yung had just completed Design of Randomised Control Trials (DES) as the final unit in a Graduate Diploma in Biostatistics, and he was in the process of planning research projects for the Master of Biostatistics award at the time of his tragic death. This award celebrates Dr. Yung’s dedication to learning and his desire to use his statistical skills to improve the quality and rigour of research in his specialty area of paediatric intensive care. The prize aims to inspire BCA students to pursue excellence in their own educational journeys.
We are excited to announce that we have our first draw for the BCA Student Prize! Dr Vickie Cai and Dr Mallory Trent both from the University of Sydney received incredible scores in the 4 core units: Mathematical Foundations for Biostatistics (MFB), Principles of Statistical Inference (PSI), Regression Modelling for Biostatistics 1 & 2 (RM1 & RM2) to both win a $500 voucher. University of Sydney Program Coordinator A/Prof Erin Cvejic presented the awards to the very deserving recipients.

To ensure continuous improvement of the BCA program, an external program review was conducted in 2019. The review produced a set of recommendations outlining how the program could be further developed and adapted to respond to the broadening demands of biostatistics in the workplace; be it in government, industry or academia. These recommendations formed the basis of a restructure of the BCA Masters and Graduate Diploma in Biostatistics.
The new structure reduces the number of core (compulsory) units, allowing greater flexibility in the choices of elective units. Additionally, students will be able to choose up to 2 elective units for the Masters degree (and 1 for Graduate Diploma) from outside the list of BCA electives.
We are excited to introduce these changes; to offer a program that aligns with changing student needs and enables more choice within the program to suit particular and varying interests.
